Does God Really Love Cheerful Giver?
Perhaps you have heard this Bible passage quoted- it has taken on the life of a cliché!
Yet there is a truth behind the sentiment- God loves a cheerful giver because He is a
cheerful giver! When God invites us to bring our tithes and offerings it is not because he
needs our money- but because He takes delight in our responsiveness to his gift!
Tithing is a principle that is taught throughout the entire Bible- it is giving God the first
part of what he has given us. When we tithe, we are expressing worship in a tangible
way by putting God first in our lives. Bringing our tithes is an opportunity for us to give
God our thanks, show God we trust Him, and fight against greed in our hearts...all while
allowing us to be a part of the most important work in life that is spreading the Good
News of Jesus Christ!
Why Would I Tithe?
There might be several answers to this question- I would like to highlight two of them.
First, it is one of the ways that God has invited us to participate in the ministry of the
church and the distribution of the Gospel. Paul writes to the Philippian church a note of
gratitude because of the monetary gift they sent. Their outpouring of tithes and offerings
paved the way for others to hear the Gospel and be saved!
The second is that it is one of the ways that God has asked us to take care of our own.
In another of Paul’s letters in the New Testament, 2 Corinthians, he reminds us of the
example of the Macedonians whose extreme poverty gave way to an extraordinary act
of generosity. In fact, “they begged for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints.”
Our tithes and offerings help our church family in times of need!
Is Tithing your Next Step?
Perhaps before you answer that you would consider taking part in a tithe challenge?
God says in his word that our tithing is one place that we can test him- that if we would
put our faith on the line and bring him the first part of our income he would lavish us with
blessings. So jump in…take the tithe challenge and just see what God is going to do!
